The question of the constitution of the

Sanitary Board engaged the attention of my

predecessor and myself, and in my despatch

No.254 of the 6th November, 1896, I informed

Sir William Robinson that the matter might,

in my opinion, stand over for the considera-

tion of his successor. I shall be glad to

know who are the present members of the

Board and whether there are at present any

vacancies for nominated members. In your

letter to the General Officer Commanding

written on the 29th of May last you stated

that "there is no vacancy upon the existing

Sanitary Board to which I have authority to

appoint" but I have been under the im-

pression that there are vacancies and that

there would therefore be no need to amend

Ordinance 24 of 1887 in order to place upon

the Board a representative of the Garrison
